Pokemon Unveils Two New Games in their Ongoing Series

Just when you think they're calling it quits, they shock you yet again. That's right – Pokémon has recently unveiled two new games in their ever-popular ongoing series: Pokémon Black and Pokémon White. Apparently, after years of naming their games after precious gems and metals, Pokémon has decided to go back to plain-old colors. You will begin your quest in the, until now, unidentified region of Isshu and have three fresh starters to choose from. Your options for starters are a grass snake, a fire pig (which, sadly, does not evolve into a ham), and a water otter…try to contain your excitement now.

In addition to a new game with all-new features, there are now 156 brand-new characters for the fans to drool over, including numerous mythical Pokémon. Since it's not arduous enough trying to "catch ‘em all" already, now you've got an absurd 649 Pokémon to attain in order to achieve the full PokeDex.

Like with most contemporary Pokémon releases, there are novel legendaries…of course there's the obligatory cutesy, fairy-like thing (named Victini; fire-psychic type), but the ones shown on the game's covers seem promising…and both are dragons. Yeah, really innovative; Diamond, Pearl, and Emerald totally didn't have dragon legendaries or anything. Reshiram – a fire-dragon type – is the crown jewel of Pokémon Black, and Zekrom is the coveted electric-dragon marvel of Pokémon White. Each of these bad boys comes equipped with signature moves of blockbuster destruction, just like their legendary brethren.

As for the rest of the recently-exposed Pokémon, most of them look ridiculous; there is a Pokémon that's a set of metal gears that's named Gear. Talk about originality. While you can find a couple of rather remarkable Pokémon this time around (like Zoroark), the selections are mostly abysmal. Overall, the character designs seem to be a lot more complicated than previous generations; Pokémon seems to be trying too hard to make their characters look attractive when simpler designs would work just as well, if not better.

Here's a little list of some features included in Black and White besides the Pokémon. Some are new, and some are those good old tried and true classics:

  • Triple trainer battles
  • Double wild battles
  • Battle targeting (either strike all Pokémon, including your team, or move Pokémon around to strike a particular foe)
  • New attacks, TMs and HMs (several of which deal 100+ damage)
  • Dream World, an internet-based area where you can find and catch different Pokémon
  • Can find rare evolutions in the grass, like Ninetales and Tyranitar
  • Three sets of Move Tutors
  • Various events, such as massages, swarms, and obtainable items
  • High Link: allows you to use wi-fi to walk around Isshu with friends

And here are the downsides:

  • Roaming legendaries (like Cresselia or the three dogs)
  • Specific trading evolution (meaning you have to trade a Pokémon for another particular one before evolution occurs)
  • Most Pokémon and berries from preceding generations are unobtainable in the game and must either be traded or captured via Dream World
  • Season cycle: Certain Pokémon can only be captured during certain seasons. A season lasts one month
  • No new Eevee evolutions

People are getting pretty nuts over these games, like to the point of legal action being threatened. Some websites, such as PokeBeach and Serebii.net had screen shots posted of all the new Pokémon almost immediately after their release in Japan, and all sites doing this got nasty little notes from Nintendo telling them to remove the pictures. The game sold over two million copies in Japan alone and has received very high reviews from popular overseas entertainment sources like Famistu…in America, though, we won't know for sure until the spring of next year when the game hits our shores.
